Holmes-Hunter Academic Building, University of Georgia

Framing UGA’s historic North Campus, the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building unites two 19th-century structures. Restored to honor its architectural legacy, the project also honors Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter-Gault, the first African American students to enroll at the University of Georgia. The rehabilitation removed infill to reopen the 1905 central courtyard, restored the grand portico and west entry, and updated historic stucco, windows, and woodwork. Inside, the project resolved decades of disjointed renovations, highlighted hidden cast iron columns, and preserved a rare historic mural. Modern systems and circulation were sensitively integrated, improving ADA accessibility and function. The building now houses key student offices and displays commemorative installations honoring Holmes and Hunter-Gault. Supported by the Woodruff Foundation and Board of Regents, this transformative project preserves a powerful place of remembrance and progress in the heart of UGA’s campus.
Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations, or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
