We are interested in collecting papers, photographs, books, and textiles, and objects of importance to the Society, Carroll County and the West Georgia Area. The Society is especially interested in collecting old photographs, and items relating to the rural and farming history of the county.

The Cherokee County Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation and education. We offer informative field trips, meetings, events, and other programs. We also assist local residents in preserving historic resources.

The Etowah Valley Historical Society, Inc. was founded in 1972 by concerned owners of historical properties in Bartow County. From a membership of twenty-four, primarily interested in preserving the Etowah River Valley region of this county, the society has evolved into an organization of over 600 people dedicated to the promotion of historic education and preservation throughout Bartow County.

From its construction in 1882 until 1929, Fountain (Stone) Hall primarily functioned as the administration building for Atlanta University, though it contained a chapel, library, recitation rooms, and laboratories during various times in its history. It served in a similar capacity for Morris Brown College for many years. Currently, the structure contains offices, including that of renowned scholar Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, a chapel, art studios, and a gallery.

Founded in 1971, Georgia Humanities is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are the only organization in Georgia providing statewide support of the humanities. In this role, we share and support programming that engages all ages and backgrounds to explore what shapes us as individuals and binds us together as Georgians.

The Gordon County Historical Society maintains Oakleigh, one of the most historic homes in the county, maintains a comprehensive library of records of the county’s history, supports the New Echota Historic Museum, maintains local landmarks such as Peter’s Plantation, Dews Pond, various cemeteries including the Resaca Cemetery, and co-sponsors the annual Battle of Resaca Reenactment.

We are Thomasville’s First Black History Museum, established in 1995 to educate individuals about the history and culture of African Americans locally and nationally. The museum was founded by African-American historian, James “Jack” Hadley who has preserved over 4,669 pieces of African American artifacts with emphasis on Thomasville’s First Black Achievers, state and national achievers that commemorate their lives and accomplishments.

The Lockerly Arboretum Foundation has served the Milledgeville and Middle Georgia community for over forty years as a public garden and educational resource. Founded in 1965 by Mr. E.J. Grassmann of Elizabeth, N.J., the foundation seeks to provide outstanding ecological, horticultural and historical education in order to promote preservation and stewardship of the environment through greater knowledge and appreciation for our natural resources, wildlife and flora, and the history of our area.

The mission of the Madison-Morgan Conservancy is to provide public education on conservation matters and to protect and enhance the heritage and quality of life of the residents of Morgan County, by preserving historic sites, greenspace, farmland, and timberland.

The Madison CVB is the marketing arm for both Madison and Morgan County. The CVB operates the Visitors Center (open daily) which provides visitors with information on shopping, dining, lodging and attractions.

As one of Georgia’s elder Main Street programs, Main Street Newnan has served as a liaison between the City of Newnan and the business community, local and regional economic development groups and the non-profit sector since 1986.

Ships of the Sea Museum exhibits ship models, paintings and maritime antiques, principally from the great Era of Atlantic trade during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Herndon Home is a memorial to the Alonzo Herndon family. The family’s tradition of public service and philanthropy contributed substantially to the educational, social, and cultural development of Atlanta. This building, its furnishings and family papers richly document the significance of the Herndons within the broad patterns of American history. Staff and volunteers empower and educate the community through preservation and development of ideas.

Thronateeska’s campus includes a history museum, science museum, rail car display, a 40′ full dome HD planetarium, the Georgia Museum of Surveying & Mapping, and the South Georgia Archives. The museum facilities are housed in historic structures and new construction designed to reflect and retain the railroad heritage of the area.
