Andrews Chapel Schoolhouse

Thomaston - Upson County

Established in 1876, the Andrews Chapel One-room Schoolhouse was rebuilt by the community in 1912 after storm damage, and remains the last of 47 such schoolhouses once found in Upson County. Though it closed in 1941, the school continued to serve as a gathering place for gospel and Sacred Harp singings. In 2018, the property was deeded to Upson County, with the Upson Historical Society assuming stewardship. Following a conditions assessment performed by the Georgia Trust, extensive restoration was undertaken to preserve the school’s integrity, including structural repairs, a new roof, window restoration, electrical upgrades, and interior refinishing. Through generous donations and meticulous care from community members, the schoolhouse now stands as a beautifully preserved symbol of rural education and local heritage, thanks to the dedication of the community and Upson County leadership.
