Georgia Statewide Cemetery Context

The Georgia Department of Transportation’s initiative to create a statewide “Context and Handbook for the Identification and Evaluation of Georgia’s Historic Burial Grounds” has resulted in a comprehensive guide. Tailored for Section 106 practitioners, the document explores Georgia’s burial traditions, beliefs and cultural influences, addressing the emotional significance and challenges inherent in cemetery evaluations. Developed by New South Associates and reviewed by GDOT and the Georgia Historic Preservation Division, the context provides a three-part structure: a narrative history, a toolkit with vocabulary and survey methods, and a process for evaluating significance and eligibility. This invaluable resource not only aids preservation professionals but also serves as a gateway for anyone interested in understanding the rich layers of history embedded in Georgia’s burial grounds. Available on GDOT’s website, it marks a significant achievement in preserving the diverse and complex cultural heritage of the state.
