Jones Mercantile Building
In 1879, R.T. Jones started his mercantile business in downtown Canton, later expanding the building in 1914 and 1921. In the 1970s, the historic façade was covered with stucco and steel panels due to modernization efforts. Operating for nearly 100 years, the Jones Mercantile building also served as the county administration building before becoming vacant. Initial efforts, led by the city, restored the building’s historic façade, until the eventual purchase by Hodge and Schmeelk. Using historic tax credits, these buyers have returned this downtown anchor to a functional retail and office space. Preserving historic elements while balancing modern functionality with period aesthetics, the rehabilitation of this 45,000-square-foot space has positively impacted the community of Canton.
Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
