Emma Hamlet House

Savannah - Chatham County

Constructed in 1856 by Savannah carpenter and builder John Hamlet, the residence reflects the civic and professional standing of its owner, who served the city as a fire captain and alderman. Recorded in the name of his wife, Emma, the house later evolved into a multi-unit property through a series of documented alterations that mirror Savannah’s residential growth. A contributing resource within the Savannah National Historic Landmark District, the building has been thoughtfully rehabilitated for continued multi-family use. Historic tax credits allowed the project to prioritize stabilization and repair of historic masonry, windows and doors, and interior finishes. A deteriorated front porch was reconstructed based on documentary evidence. All new work is compatible with the historic character, ensuring the building’s continued contribution to Savannah’s historic urban fabric.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
