The Patriot Story: Midway Congregational Church, Midway, GA
Midway Congregational Church was a hotbed of Patriot activity in colonial Georgia. Its members, like Declaration of Independence signers Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnett, were fierce advocates for independence. This devotion made the church and community a target for British forces. The British burned the original church to the ground in 1778 after defeating American defenders at the Battle of Midway Church, where Colonel James Screven was mortally wounded. Though destroyed, the church’s legacy of patriotism persisted. The current structure, rebuilt in 1792, stands as a symbol of the community’s commitment to the cause, housing the graves of Revolutionary War heroes in its adjacent cemetery.
