Lucas Theatre
Opened in 1921 and designed by architect Claude K. Howell, the Lucas Theatre was long celebrated as the “Jewel of Savannah.” After closing in 1976, the building narrowly escaped demolition through the efforts of preservation advocates and was restored and reopened in 2000. Today, it remains a vital cultural venue and a cornerstone of Savannah’s historic downtown. Under the stewardship of the Savannah College of Art and Design, the Lucas Theatre underwent a meticulous restoration of its plaster, paint, and gilded decorative finishes throughout the auditorium, balcony, and lobby. Accumulated paint was removed to reveal original relief detail, while deteriorated plaster elements were repaired or recast using traditional mold-making techniques. Finishes were restored, including the application of more than 15,000 sheets of genuine gold leaf. Completed within a compressed schedule, the project ensures the long-term preservation of this iconic Georgia theater.
