Forsyth Park Fountain

Savannah - Chatham County

Established in 1851, Forsyth Park has long served as one of Savannah’s most cherished public spaces. At its center stands the iconic cast-iron fountain, designed in 1858 by the renowned Janes, Beebe & Co. Iron Foundry. Following decades of wear, and the last major restoration in the 1980s, the fountain required comprehensive conservation to preserve its historic character.
The recent restoration was guided by detailed historic research, thorough inspection, and a carefully developed treatment plan. The fountain was fully disassembled—including removal of the statue, swans, and triton—allowing for the repair and rebuilding of historic components. Layers of failing paint were also removed to reveal original detailing. Masonry at the fountain’s base was repaired and repointed, and the basin was resurfaced. Decorative urns were recast using original molds, and the historic spray pattern was restored to operation. All work matched the historic materials and finishes, ensuring the fountain’s continued role as a defining feature of Forsyth Park and a Savannah landmark.

The Chairman’s Award is presented at the sole discretion of the Georgia Trust Chairman of the Board of Trustees to recognize extraordinary efforts contributing to the preservation of Georgia’s historic resources.
