Every year across Georgia, historic buildings, neighborhoods, schools, churches, and cultural landmarks face the threat of being lost forever—whether through neglect, demolition, development, or decay. In 2006, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation launched the Places in Peril program to change that.
🔍 The Purpose
Places in Peril is more than a list—it’s a powerful call to action. This annual program identifies and raises awareness for Georgia’s most endangered historic places, giving them visibility, support, and a pathway to preservation. Sites are nominated by the public and selected based on their significance, the level of threat they face, and the potential for community support and impact.
Since its inception, Places in Peril has brought critical attention to over 200 sites across the state—from rural schoolhouses and downtown commercial buildings to archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. And the impact is clear: over 95% of these places remain standing today.
🛠️ How It Works
Each year, the Trust accepts nominations from individuals, organizations, and communities who know of places that matter and are at risk. Properties considered for the list should meet the following criteria:
- Historic Significance: Sites should be at least 50 years or older.
- Threat Level: They must be under a serious threat, whether structural, political, or developmental.
- Community Support: There should be demonstrated local interest in saving the site or the potential to inspire support.
Nominations for the upcoming year’s list are accepted on a rolling basis, but those received by September 1 will be considered for next year’s Places in Peril list, announced publicly in February.
