Savannah Culinary Institute

Savannah - Chatham County

Constructed in 1856, this three-story brick masonry building is representative of the 19th-century structures that once lined Savannah’s original business district along Bay Street. Featuring granite and cast-iron storefront surrounds, the building later housed nightlife venues before falling into severe disrepair. Acquired in 2018 by the Savannah Technical College Foundation, the building was rehabilitated to house the college’s Culinary Arts Program. The project addressed significant structural deterioration, including failing masonry walls and deflected heart pine joists, using compatible materials and in-kind repairs. The historic storefront was restored, and non-historic windows and doors were replaced with accurate wood units. Teaching kitchens were carefully integrated to minimize impacts on historic spaces, alongside discreet modern systems. Today, the project preserves a Bay Street landmark while creating a dynamic educational and community resource.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
