Mark C. McDonald

Atlanta - Fulton County

McDonald’s 37-year career in historic preservation has left an enduring impact on communities across Georgia and the Southeast. As president and CEO of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation from 2008 to 2023, he led the organization through a transformative era of growth and innovation. During his tenure, the Trust doubled the number of protected properties through its Revolving Fund and Easements programs, completed a $2.3 million restoration of its headquarters at Rhodes Hall, and launched the nation’s first green certification program for historic buildings.  He also strengthened the organization’s financial position, expanded statewide educational programs, and increased preservation support for African American historic sites.

Before joining the Georgia Trust, Mark served as executive director of three major preservation organizations in the Southeast: Historic Salisbury Foundation in North Carolina, the Mobile Historic Development Commission in Alabama, and the Historic Savannah Foundation, shaping preservation practice across the region. His leadership also extended nationally through service with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and other organizations.

Widely recognized for his contributions, Mark’s career reflects a lifetime of dedication to preserving historic places, strengthening communities, and advancing the field of historic preservation.

The Mary Gregory Jewett Award for distinguished service in the field of preservation is named for the Trust’s first executive director and is the Trust’s top honor given to an individual. This award is reserved to recognize those whose dedication and service to the field of historic preservation in the state of Georgia is extraordinary.
