Lookout Mountain Club

Lookout Mountain - Walker County

Originally opened in 1925 as the Fairyland Inn, the Lookout Mountain Club was developed by Garnet and Frieda Carter as part of the visionary Fairyland community on Lookout Mountain. Designed by architect William Hatfield Sears, the Tudor Revival building features asymmetrical massing, stucco and timber detailing, local stone masonry, and picturesque forms set within a dramatic natural landscape. For nearly a century, it has served as the architectural and social heart of the Lookout Mountain community. Stewardship of the nearly 100-year-old building has focused on restoring historic fabric while adapting the structure for continued use. Guided by historic documentation, non-historic alterations were removed, and original windows, wrought-iron lighting, timber ceilings, and ornamental concrete details, were uncovered and restored. Significant structural rehabilitation has stabilized stone foundations, masonry lintels, roof framing, and floor systems, with discreet steel reinforcement introduced where necessary. Modern building systems and life-safety upgrades have also been sensitively integrated, ensuring the long-term preservation of this iconic landmark.
