Union Brothers and Sisters Mission Hall

Meridian - McIntosh County
c. 1900

Union Brothers and Sisters Mission Hall, built around 1900, is one of the last surviving landmarks of the historic Hudson community, a once-thriving African American settlement near Darien in McIntosh County. Established as a mission in 1887 by formerly enslaved residents, the hall served as a burial society, mission hall and community center. Operated by the Hudson Home Society, a fraternal organization that provided burial insurance and mutual aid, the building reflects the social, economic, and spiritual life of a now largely forgotten settlement within the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.

Threat

Years of vacancy, exposure to coastal weather and limited maintenance have left the building in deteriorating condition. Without stabilization and reinvestment, this culturally significant structure faces continued decline amid development pressure and environmental challenges along Georgia’s coast.

An event honoring the Union Brothers and Sisters Hall will be held on April 23. Click here to learn more.
