Salem Campground

Covington - Newton County

Established in 1828, Salem Campground is one of Georgia’s oldest and most intact religious camp meeting sites. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the property retains its historic layout, centered on an open-air tabernacle built in 1854 and surrounded by historic “tents,” sponsored by families and used during annual meetings. The Cunningham-Ramsey Tent, built around 1840, is the oldest tent on the grounds and one of fewer than ten surviving pre-1850 camp meeting tents in Georgia. Together, the campground reflects the religious, social and architectural traditions that shaped rural life in the 19th century.

Threat

Once a rural retreat, the Salem Campground now sits in a changing landscape as suburban development encroaches in the area. The intact site reflects its 19th century beginnings, but ongoing stewardship of the historic tents and structures require comprehensive investment in stabilization and restoration.
