Boggs Rural Life Center

Keysville - Burke County

Founded in 1906, Boggs Academy began as a small rural school for African American children and grew into a nationally respected boarding school operated by the Presbyterian Church. Emphasizing academics, vocational training and moral development, Boggs educated generations of students from across Georgia and beyond, many of whom went on to colleges nationwide. The campus fostered a vibrant intellectual, cultural and spiritual life until the school closed in the 1980s amid declining enrollment. In 1991, the site was reborn as the Boggs Rural Life Center, continuing its legacy of education, leadership and rural community empowerment.

Threat

Decades of deferred maintenance, as well as impacts from Hurricane Helene, have left many historic campus buildings vulnerable. Failing roofing systems have caused significant water damage, placing several structures — including the 1924 dining hall, a central feature of campus life — at risk of loss. While the Phelps Administration Building recently received grant funding toward restoration, substantial funding gaps threaten the long-term preservation of this significant rural African American landmark.
