The Deadliest Hour of the Siege of Savannah: Spring Hill Redoubt, Savannah, GA

One of the deadliest battles of the Revolutionary War unfolded at the Spring Hill Redoubt in Savannah, following Britain’s 1778 decision to redirect its military strategy toward the southern colonies, where officials believed Loyalist support would strengthen the Crown’s position.

As part of this southern campaign, a British force under Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell captured Savannah on December 29, 1778. By the fall of 1779, American forces sought to reclaim the city, setting in motion a major confrontation that would become one of the war’s bloodiest encounters.

Despite these efforts, Savannah would remain under British control until the end of the war.
