Old Post Office

Bainbridge - Decatur County

Since 1914, the Old Post Office in Bainbridge has anchored a prominent corner on the downtown square, serving as a postal facility and later, a federal courthouse. Designed in the Classical Revival style, the building reflects its role as a civic and governmental center. In the late 20th century, it was transferred to the Decatur County Board of Education and used for administrative offices before becoming vacant in 2022. Using historic tax credits, the rehabilitation adapted the building for use as an event venue with guest suites and a speakeasy-style bar. Non-historic office alterations were removed to restore the grand lobby and former mail-sorting room, now a ballroom. Original hardwood floors, converted gas light fixtures, and the postal inspector’s catwalk were preserved. Minimal new construction was discreetly integrated, and the project returned a landmark to active use.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
