SUMMARY:Insider Tour: Prince Hall Masonic Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Join The Georgia Trust for an exclusive tour of Prince Hall\, one of Atlanta’s most significant buildings. This tour traces the building’s rich history on Atlanta’s famous Auburn Avenue and its remarkable recent rehabilitation. \nBuilt in 1937 under the direction of John Wesley Dobbs\, Prince Hall once served as the home of WERD Radio\, the first Black‑owned radio station in the United States. The iconic landmark also housed the Madame C.J. Walker beauty school\, continuing the legacy of America’s first self‑made female millionaire. And most notably\, this building served as the headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference\, where Martin Luther King Jr.\, Andrew Young\, Ella Baker\, Ralph David Abernathy\, and other Civil Rights leaders organized campaigns that reshaped the nation. \nIn 2025\, an extensive rehabilitation of Prince Hall was completed. The project included restoring its masonry\, windows\, and other character‑defining features and adding a new roof. The building will be used by the Prince Hall Masons and other masonic groups\, with a single tenant on the second floor and the National Park Service occupying the first floor and basement for public interpretation. Today the building remains a defining anchor along one of Atlanta’s most historic streets.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch and Learn: Austin Dabney and Black Georgians in the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Zoom \nBlack Georgians\, like their state\, played an important role in the American Revolution. By their choices\, they extended the ideals of liberty to all people everywhere. They were found fighting and even dying in both armies\, and Black Haitian soldiers served in Georgia\, where some remained after the war. George Liele\, the first Black Baptist minister\, took his ministry to Jamaica\, and his followers would help end slavery throughout the British Empire. His disciple David George led resistance to British policy in Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone. \nThe story of Austin Dabney is one of the most remarkable and controversial in American history. An African American Georgia teenager\, he did not join the British in search of freedom from slavery. Dabney fought on the side of the Patriots in some of the most desperate fighting of the American Revolution. Seriously wounded in a battle\, he might have been left for dead. \nDabney survived because a white fellow soldier rescued him and took him home to be nursed back to health by his family. Although crippled for life\, he survived the wounds and would come to live with the family until he died in 1830. His last guardian\, William Harris\, the nephew of David H. Thurmond\, who rescued him from the battlefield\, would name a son Austin Dabney Harris. \nAustin Dabney was the first person granted freedom from slavery by a government for his sacrifices in the American Revolution. He was the first to receive a pension and the only person of his race to do so for almost the first 50 years of the United States. \nJoin noted author and scholar Bob Davis for a Lunch and Learn during Black History Month as he discusses the role of these and other remarkable African Americans during the Revolutionary War. \nZOOM LINK

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Danielle S. Willkens
DESCRIPTION:Author of The Transatlantic Design Network: Thomas Jefferson\, John Soane\, and Agents of Architectural Exchange \nIn partnership with the Atlanta Preservation Center \nAlthough a good deal has been written about the voluminous intellectual exchange between Europe and the Americas in the eighteenth century across various humane disciplines\, no study to date has focused on architectural culture\, despite the fact that numerous Europeans made their way across the Atlantic to design some of America’s most important buildings. In this groundbreaking work\, Danielle Willkens authoritatively fills that gap\, defining and expounding the “transatlantic design network” of mainly British and American individuals that included Thomas Jefferson\, the architect John Soane\, and Maria Cosway\, an acclaimed painter\, musician\, composer\, and educator who maintained a lifelong correspondence with both Jefferson and Soane. \nDr. Willkens places Jefferson’s and Soane’s famous homes in a historical and aesthetic context that extends beyond their respective renown as national shrines. She shows how\, contrary to their reputations\, neither represents the product of a singular architectural vision. The contributions of other architects\, designers\, philosophers\, and friends have been effectively effaced from both Monticello and the Soane House. Dr. Willkens here corrects the record\, mapping the influence of this crucial hidden network on architecture and aesthetics on both sides of the Atlantic. \nFollowing  a brief cocktail reception\, Dr. Willkens will discuss her book and then sign copies\, which will be available for purchase. \nAUTHOR BIO\nDanielle S. Willkens is an Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT) School of Architecture. She is also the Initiative Lead for Resilient and Informed Communities for GT’s Institute for People and Technology. She is a practicing designer\, historian\, and FAA Remote Pilot\, as well as the author of The Transatlantic Design Network: Thomas Jefferson\, John Soane\, and Agents of Architectural  Exchange (2024) and Architecture for Teens: A Beginner’s Book for Aspiring Architects (2021). She has extensive experience in archives\, community-engaged research\, and the digital documentation and interpretation of heritage sites. Her research has been supported by the Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation\, the International Center for Jefferson Studies\, the American Philosophical Society\, Dumbarton Oaks\, the American Institute of Architects\, the National Park Service\, and the National Center for Preservation Training and Technology. She holds PhD in architectural history and theory from UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture\, a M.Phil from the University of Cambridge\, a Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation from Savannah College of Art and Design\, and a M.Arch and BS from the University of Virginia. She is on the Board of Trustees for the Atlanta Preservation Center and the Penn Center National Historic Landmark District\, and she currently serves as the secretary of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.
