The interior of the
house is framed but does require
rehabilitation and mechanical systems
installation. Currently the house is
zoned residential but could be rezoned
for commercial use. The open
layout will also
assist in a rehabilitation to a
commercial use.
Currently The Georgia
Trust is undertaking the physical
stabilization and exterior
rehabilitation of the property in
order to protect and prepare it for
future use. This work includes the
replacement of sill beams, repair and
replacement of brick piers, rebuilding
of the chimneys, exterior clapboard
repair, and window replacement. |

Constructed by yeoman
farmer Stephen D. Cowen in 1854, the
Cowen House is an excellent example of
a Plantation Plain type house built in
pre Civil War north Georgia. The house
is one of the few remaining antebellum
houses in Cobb
County and well
represents the lifestyle of a farming
family from this era of Georgia’s
history. The home sits on 2/3 acre at
the intersection of Cowan Road and
Pinehurst Circle and is strategically
located on the road between downtown
Acworth and the Interstate. It is
listed in the National Register of
Historic Places.

The Cowen Farmstead is
located between I-75 and downtown
Acworth. From Atlanta: Take I-75
north to Exit 277. Turn left onto Ga.
Hwy 92. Go approximately 1/4 mile and
the house will be on the left. |
