PROFITING FROM THE PAST:
STUDY FINDS GEORGIA MAKES CENTS OF HISTORY
According
to a 1999 study
released by the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Dept. of
Natural Resources and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, many
cities across Georgia are looking to a prosperous future by profiting from their
past. The study, which examines the
economic impact of historic preservation in the state, reports that preservation
is an economic powerhouse that creates jobs, brings tourist dollars to
communities, creates resources for investment in homes and small businesses, and
revitalizes downtown business districts.
Profiting From The Past is a collaborative effort of the
Historic Preservation Division, the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, the
Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the Georgia Main Street program, and
numerous groups and individuals.
