Savannah
College of Art and Design receives award
for
longstanding contributions to historic
preservation
The
Georgia Trust State recognizes college’s
commitment with preservation service award
ATLANTA—Savannah
College of Art and Design received an award
for Preservation Service from The Georgia
Trust for Historic Preservation at its
annual meeting April 17 in Savannah.
The
college, with buildings located in four
distinct historical districts throughout the
city of Savannah, has restored and renovated
over fifty buildings for use by the school
itself. The importance of the school’s
impact on the preservation of the city,
however, is not only in its attention to
individual buildings, but also to its
continuing effort to weave the historic
buildings of the campus into the
surroundings of downtown Savannah. This
attention to the city and to the college’s
relationship with it has had a large social,
cultural and economic impact, revitalizing
the relationship between the community and
the buildings that exist within it. This
tradition will continue into the future, as
each year more buildings are renovated and
made vital members of the growing historic
community, making both the school and
Savannah models for historic
preservationists around the world.
Since
SCAD was founded in 1978, historic
preservation has been an important part of
the school’s curriculum. Fields of study
in preservation at both the undergraduate
and graduate levels were established in the
same year, and since then, the school has
graduated over 350 preservation
professionals.
The
Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation,
founded in 1973, is the country’s largest
statewide, nonprofit preservation
organization, with more than 8,000 members.
For more than 20 years the Trust has
recognized preservation projects and
individuals in the state who have made
significant contributions to the field of
historic preservation. Awards are presented
on the basis of the contributions of the
person or project to the community and/or
state and on compliance to the Secretary of
the Interior’s Standards for
Rehabilitation.
Awards
in the Excellence in Preservation Service
category recognize persons, groups,
businesses or government entities
demonstrating exemplary activities and
promoting awareness in
the field of historic preservation. The
scope of work may be of local, regional or
statewide significance. This
year the Trust presented four Preservation
Service awards.
Committed
to preserving and enhancing Georgia’s
communities and their diverse historic
resources for the education and enjoyment of
all, The Georgia Trust generates community
revitalization by finding buyers for
endangered properties acquired by its
Revolving Fund, provides design assistance
to 46 Georgia Main Street cities and
encourages neighborhood revitalization;
trains Georgia’s teachers to engage
students in 51 Georgia school systems to
discover state and national history through
their local historic resources; and
advocates for funding, tax incentives and
other laws aiding preservation efforts. The
Georgia Trust is a recipient of the Trustees
Award for Organizational Excellence from the
National Trust for Historic Preservation.
