2004 PRESERVATION AWARDS: PIEDMONT PARK CONSERVANCY

With a rich past that includes the Cotton States Exposition of 1895, the international debut of motion pictures and Booker T. Washington’s “Cast Down Your Buckets” speech, Piedmont Park is one of Atlanta’s most treasured historic sites.

Over the last 15 years, the Conservancy has worked diligently to save this living landmark and has launched a 25 million dollar restoration program designed to reestablish the park as Atlanta’s premier green space. Improvements include restoring the 10th Street Meadow, rehabilitating of the historic park gazebo and adding a new bridge over Lake Clara Meer (above).

The Conservancy also provides community enrichment through historical tours, year-round environmental education opportunities (above), a summer day camp and volunteer activities, including the "Clean & Green" program (left).

Thanks to the Conservancy’s efforts, the rejuvenated Piedmont Park delights millions of visitors each year and was recently named one of the country’s “Top Lawns with a View.”
