Created in 1994 and administered through the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia Heritage Program has provided funding to support both development activities, and more recently, predevelopment activities, for historic and archaeological resources in Georgia. Georgia Heritage Program competitive grant awards are required to be matched at a 60% state - 40% local ratio. Matching funds from eligible local governments and non-sectarian, nonprofit organizations must be cash. Each application will be rated according to the eligibility and selection criteria and in relation to all other applications received.
Eligible development activities include stabilization, preservation, rehabilitation and restoration. Eligible predevelopment activities include the preparation of plans and specifications, feasibility studies, historic structure reports, and other building-specific or site-specific preservation plans. Historic and archaeological resources seeking funding assistance must be listed in, or eligible for listing in, the Georgia Register of Historic Places. The maximum grant amount that can be requested for individual development projects is $40,000 with a minimum of $5,000 and the maximum grant amount for individual predevelopment projects is $20,000 with a minimum of $2,000.
