2015 PRESERVATION AWARDS: EXCELLENCE IN PRESERVATION SERVICE

FORT DANIEL FOUNDATION
Buford, Gwinnett County

The Fort Daniel Foundation oversees the rehabilitation and preservation of Fort Daniel, a War of 1812 supply station and defensive battlement that later faded into obscurity. The site of the fort was rediscovered on privately owned land in 2007 by the Foundation's sister organization, the Gwinnett Archaeological Research Society. In 2009 the site was listed as a Georgia Trust Place in Peril and received a grant for site planning from the Trust. In 2012 Gwinnett County aided the Foundation in order to develop a county history and archaeology park. The Foundation holds an annual Frontier Faire and is developing educational resources that provide critical opportunities for hands-on experiences that foster an understanding of local history, archaeology, and the importance of preservation.
