2011 PRESERVATION AWARDS: EXCELLENCE IN REHABILITATION

Pulaski County Board of Education
Hawkinsville, Pulaski County

The History
The Old Hawkinsville High School is a building that has evolved to meet the changing needs of the county school system since the late nineteenth century. This landmark building located outside of the local design review district has been owned and utilized by the Pulaski County Board of Education since the 1940s. Originally built as a schoolhouse, the Pulaski County Board of Education building currently is used pre-k education, adult learning and administration.

The Project
After being placed on The Georgia Trust’s 2006 Places in Peril list, the successful rehabilitation of the building progressed in phases and was guided by a partnership of architects, preservation planners and historians.  The project resulted in a rehabilitation that maintained the original corridors, molding, and surface treatments throughout the building, and replaced non-conforming 1970’s windows with custom designed, cost-effective replacements which are true to the period of the building.
