Enjoy cocktails and dinner at Peacewood Plantation |
Washington-Wilkes County combines the charm of a storied past with the vibrancy of an energetic community. Chartered in 1780, Washington was the center of the Georgia's first major back-country settlement. Historic and hospitable, Washington welcomes the Georgia Trust to its picturesque town square and many of its famous antebellum homes, including Holly Court where Varina (Mrs. Jefferson) Davis stayed when the Confederate government fled south. The weekend includes two distinctive tours: the rural hamlet of Danburg in North Wilkes County, and the gracious homes and attractions of Washington, the county seat.
On Friday, wander through the hamlet of Danburg in North Wilkes County, visiting antebellum and Victorian homes and sites in a rural setting. Ramblers will register and check-in at the Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center (29 West Square). Ramblers will enjoy a rare opportunity to see inside the gorgeous homes of Danburg in north Wilkes County. Friday night all Ramblers will enjoy a cocktails and dinner at Peacewood Plantation, built in the 1790s as the Wingfield home, a simple Federal Plantation Plain house. After dinner, mingle at the Retro Theater’s Wine Bar, browse their bookstore, and enjoy a film in this recently renovated theater
Saturday, explore Washington's history through a full roster of historic homes and local places of interest. A delicious breakfast will be served at First Baptist Church of Washington, built in 1884. Check-in and orientation will take place inside the Fellowship Hall. Saturday lunch will be served at First United Methodist Church, built in 1910. Among many other architectural treasures, Ramblers will tour Holly Court where Varina (Mrs. Jefferson) Davis stayed when the Confederate government fled south and Magnolia Cottage, a charming Queen Anne Cottage built in 1873 by Henry Wylie as a wedding present for his daughter, Nannie, and her husband, Wylie DuBose.

Great Oaks is one of many historic sites that will be open for 'Ramblers' during the 2009 Fall Ramble
