Whitesburg area and other county sites:

Whitesburg Baptist Church 662 Main Street, Whitesburg
The Gothic Revival Whitesburg Baptist Church was built from 1875 to 1876. The wood-frame building has wood lap siding, brick piers infilled with concrete blocks and stained glass windows. Doors on either side of the foyer were originally used as separate entrances for men and women. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
Directions from Carrollton: Take State Hwy 16 south (Alt Hwy 2). Proceed 10 miles into Whitesburg. The church is on the right.

Eric Vernon and Inez Arnold Folds House 1575 Highway 16 S.
The owner of several automotive dealerships in the Carrollton area, Vernon Folds became interested in dairy farming late in life. In 1948, he hired Atlanta architect Clement Ford to design a classical revival home on his newly established country estate. The property was used by Oak Mountain Academy from 1966 to1997 as a private school. In 2001, it was deeded to the county for use as a recreation park. The house is currently in a state of disrepair, and preservation efforts are being planned.

Johnson’s Sweet Potato Storage House U.S. Hwy 27 S. and Ringer Road
Built by W.E. Johnson near the town of Roopville, this produce storage house with its brightly painted Coca-Cola advertisement is one of the most photographed landmarks in Carroll County along U.S. Hwy 27 S. The storage building’s slated floor regulates airflow to cure sweet potatoes so they will last through the winter cold. In recent years, yellow sunflowers have been planted in the fields next to this site.

Directions: Located on U.S. 27 S. near Ringer Rd. between towns of Carrollton and Roopville.

Veal School 2753 Old Columbus Road
Located in southwest Carroll County, the Veal School is an excellent example of a typical early-20th century consolidated public school in rural Georgia. The school was constructed in 1900 and significantly expanded and altered in 1929.  It features painted cedar shingles and a standing-seam tin hipped roof.
Directions: The Veal School is in the far southwest corner of Carroll County, south of State Hwy 5. Turn onto old Columbus Road, and the school is located to your right behind Veal Baptist Church. Park at church.
