What
is the Georgia Main Street Program?
The
Georgia Main Street program offers services to
help communities improve a downtown’s quality of
life. Designated Georgia Main Street cities receive
technical assistance and resources to assist the local
community in building a stronger local economy through
revitalization of the downtown area.
Does
The Georgia Trust administer the Georgia Main Street
Program?
No,
the program is administered by the Office
of Downtown Development of the Georgia Department
of Community Affairs.
The Georgia Trust Main Street Design Assistance
program has been providing design and rendering
assistance to the Georgia Main Street office since the
inception of the Main Street program in Georgia in
1981. A grant administered by the Department of
Community Affairs funds the design assistance program.
What
is The Georgia Trust’s Main Street Design Assistance
(MSDA) program?
The
Georgia Trust offers design and technical assistance
to Georgia's designated "Main
Street" cities, as well as to other
communities throughout the state, in order to
encourage rehabilitation and the revitalization of
Georgia's downtowns. The program educates the public
on how the appearance of any historic, non-historic,
"non-contributing" or planned infill
commercial structure is an irreplaceable individual
piece of the overall character of each historic
downtown.
How does The
Georgia Trust’s Main Street Design Assistance
program work?
The
Trust's design manager schedules and conducts free
site visits at the request of local Main
Street Program directors, Downtown Development
Authority directors, statewide regional offices
and building owners to discuss appropriate
rehabilitation alternatives for these structures. The
manager provides, at no charge, technical information
on preservation techniques and products that would
facilitate the rehabilitation work. In addition, for a
nominal fee, the manager will produce a design concept
consisting of a colored rendering of a building's
exterior with accompanying façade notes. The Georgia
Trust’s Main Street Design Assistance office does
not provide interior planning services.
Seminars,
workshops, slide presentations and other materials are
also offered by the design manager to inform Main
Street programs, design committees, building owners,
merchants and the general public about proper downtown
design, historic preservation, and building
rehabilitation and maintenance.
Is there a cost to
use the Main Street Design Assistance program?
The Trust's Main Street
Design Assistance manager offers preservation related
technical support free of charge. This service is
available by telephone and email. Site visits, also
free of charge, can be arranged, schedule permitting.
Illustrative documents such as site plans and
renderings are available for a modest fee, ranging
from less than $100 for most individual buildings to
several hundred dollars for multi-building projects
or those of greater complexity.
